Want To Attend a Quinceañera?
Many people have heard about or even been a part of "sweet-16" parties. But did you know that in some traditions, there is a big celebration for a girl's 15th birthday as well?
In Latin American countries, "quinceañera" refers to a girl who is celebrating her 15th birthday, and the "fiesta de quince años" refers to the celebration where the young girl is announced and presented to the community now as a young woman.
In much of the United States, this tradition has been carried over thanks to the growing population of Latina women. Here, "quinceañera" also often refers to the celebration itself of a girl's 15th birthday, or her "coming of age" party.
Quinceañeras here in the United States are often big family events that can bear much resemblance to a traditional wedding: the quinceañera's dress can be as big a deal and as expensive as a traditional bride's wedding dress; there is a ceremony Mass in a church with family present; similar to a bridal party, there is a "court" of young ladies that stand at the side of the quinceañera; there is a father-daughter dance; there is a reception with much eating and dancing by all attendees; and there even is a cake-cutting too!
